Today I had the honor of speaking with the mastermind behind the Metabolic Masterpiece Program, Scott Tousignant. Scott has been on the forefront of fitness for a while and is a very recognized face on many blogs, forums and fitness sites. Today we delve into his newest program and the path leading up to it’s creation.
Scott has always been into fitness, but says it has always been, and will continue to be, a learning experience. He has a deep fascination with the human body and our ability to transform our physiques.
Scott has transformed his own physique after graduating from high school at 123 pounds. His body then took him in the opposite direction after getting married, having kids, and starting his own gym. He found himself putting on too much body fat due to stress and long hours sitting. So, Scott knows how it feels to be upset with your physique from both ends of the spectrum. He relates to the emotional struggles many of us face regarding our weight.
The Metabolic Masterpiece Program includes Scott’s 84-day Journal in which he shares his thoughts, emotional struggles, temptations, his fights with procrastination, and all the foods he ate while on the plan. Scott says that forming healthy eating habits allows your cravings for junk food to diminish to the point where you don’t crave junk every day, but instead begin to crave healthy things. The good news is, that you don’t deprive yourself while following this plan, but you learn to temper the junk with the healthy and be satisfied without over-indulging.
Scott decided to design the Metabolic Masterpiece Program because the idea really resonated with him. One of his mentors talked about “living to your potential”. He knew this would require workouts that were a little bit more in-depth than the 10 minute quick workouts he and his wife, Angie, had been doing. Scott decided to develop a program where he could mold his body into the shape he wanted with proper proportions and symmetry.
He started with shedding the fat so he was able to really analyze his body and see where he needed to focus his efforts. Scott says watching your body change before your eyes is exhilarating and motivating. Critiquing your body in a positive way is different from getting down on yourself because you don’t like your shape. With Metabolic Masterpiece, you begin your appraisal with an eye for appreciation of your current form. Then, from an artist’s point of view, you are able to sculpt and carve your figure into the image you have in mind. Scott views the body as a work of art, and training as an art form.
Inspired by the workout routines of some of the classic greats, the modern marvels, and the Michelangelos of the Greek era, Scott developed a program incorporating the best features of each. There are programs for every level.
For beginners, there are programs using three-day per week workouts; some incorporate full body, some use split routines.
For intermediate levels there are quick workouts providing rapid results workouts, while helping achieve a solid foundation. Some of the beginner workouts can be performed at home, but the majority of the workouts are designed to be done at the gym.
And don’t worry about spending hours and hours at the gym every day. Some workouts only last thirty minutes whereas the rest of the workouts can be accomplished in about an hour or so, in only four to five days per week. According to Scott, it’s time well spent, becoming the best you can be and is an investment in yourself and your body.
There is also a nutritional component to the program. Scott says diet is key. He was getting great workouts at the gym but wasn’t focused on his diet. He explains how critical your diet is to carving out your best physique. He offers a progressive approach to cutting back on junk as you go along if you’re not the type of person to go cold turkey.
He says to focus first on progress, and then you will be propelled forward by your results and will start wanting to eat in a more healthful manner. When you’re ready for that next step, Scott’s program teaches you exactly what to eat, how to determine the current macronutrient ratios for yourself, and how to measure and count calories. T – training protocol – incorporate a variety of training protocols in order to bring out all the details of your physique.
T – timing of your rest periods – mix it yup with your rest periods
R – rep range – vary your rep range
A – angles – vary the angles of motion and grip
C – concentration – mind-body connection and focus
T – tracking – track your results through nutrition and your workout journals
Follow a certain structure for four weeks and then alter your workouts with a new program from the selection. The mind-body connection and sports psychology aspect of fitness has continued to fascinate Scott and he incorporates these philosophies into his program as well. He states that it’s all about a heightened sense of awareness and how your body is responding to your workouts.
It’s also important to get into the proper mindset before even setting foot in the gym. It’s critical to be focused before going to the gym as well as while working out. You’re there for a reason and that reason is to better your physique. Having an intense focus on the contractions and the blood flow in your body is helpful in forging this connection.
Equally important is continuing to track your progress and challenging yourself anew in each and every workout. You learn to listen to your body and learn from how it responds to different foods and exercises. It’s not about the negative emotions of dread and deprivation; it’s about taking pride in your training, your nutrition, and your health, and living to your fullest potential.
